Description

Oriented in a lateral (side) view, the kidney is presented with the renal capsule as the outer contour and the anterior surface facing slightly toward the viewer, allowing the anterior superior segment to be localized near the superior pole and anterior aspect of the parenchyma. The superior pole lies cranial to the inferior pole, and the anterior superior segment occupies the anterosuperior quadrant relative to the long axis of the renal body. Posterior parenchyma falls away from the viewer, while the medial border would be expected to curve toward the renal hilum, even if hilar structures are not emphasized in this composition.
