Description
Arising from the left superior lobar bronchus, the lingular segmental bronchus is seen coursing anteroinferiorly toward the lingula of the upper lobe, positioned medial to the anterior lung margin and just inferior to the level of the upper lobe bronchial divisions. From an anterior angle, the branching point reads clearly as a discrete airway trunk separating from the superior lobar airway before subdividing into the superior and inferior lingular segmental bronchi (B4 and B5). Proximal airway caliber and cartilaginous support are emphasized, while more distal bronchioles fall away beyond the segmental level. For teaching and clinical planning, the lingular bronchus matters because the lingula behaves like the right middle lobe in both ventilation patterns and disease distribution, yet its bronchial anatomy is embedded within the left upper lobe. A small, dependent segment with a long segmental course. That combination helps explain why mucus plugging and postobstructive atelectasis can localize to the lingula, and why lingular-sparing patterns can be a clue in processes such as aspiration-related bronchiectasis or focal pneumonia.
