Description

Arising inferior to the larynx, the trachea descends in the midline of the neck and superior mediastinum before bifurcating at the carina into the right and left main (primary) bronchi. The right main bronchus typically diverges more vertically and with a wider caliber than the left, while the left main bronchus courses more obliquely, passing inferior to the arch of the aorta and anterior to the esophagus before entering the hilum. Anteriorly, the trachea relates to the manubrium and great vessels, with the esophagus lying posterior. Simple geometry, serious implications.
