Description
Occupying the right and left pleural cavities, the paired lungs sit lateral to the mediastinum and superior to the diaphragm, their apices projecting into the root of the neck and their bases resting on the diaphragmatic domes. A medial surface on each lung faces the heart and great vessels, while the costal surfaces conform to the inner thoracic wall. Centrally, the hilum marks the transition from thoracic cavity to lung parenchyma, where the principal bronchi, pulmonary arteries, pulmonary veins, bronchial vessels, and lymphatics enter or exit as the root of the lung. Pleural reflections define the confinement of this viscus respirationis within the thorax. Framing the lungs within the adult thoracic cavity matters because so many clinical problems are problems of space and boundaries, not just of airway caliber. Pneumothorax, hemothorax, and pleural effusion exploit the pleural recesses and can compress the pneumon from the periphery inward, a pattern you can teach cleanly when the costophrenic relationship is obvious. Orientation of the hilum also matters. It underpins safe placement of chest tubes, interpretation of mediastinal shift, and planning around the pulmonary artery and veins during lobectomy or pneumonectomy. Use this plate for gross anatomy and respiratory physiology teaching when you need students to connect ventilation to thoracic mechanics, or for clinical skills manuals covering pleural aspiration, thoracostomy, and surface anatomy of the lungs.
