Description
Cut through the anterior gastric wall, the distal stomach is opened to frame the pyloric antrum, pyloric canal (canalis pyloricus), and the thickened pyloric sphincter at the gastroduodenal junction. Proximal to the pylorus, the antrum lies inferior to the body of the stomach and continues distally and medially into the narrowing canal. Beyond the circular muscular ring, the first portion of the duodenum begins just to the right of the midline. A clear transition zone. Clinically, this anterior section is the teaching view for pyloric stenosis and for endoscopic and operative orientation at the gastric outlet, because it emphasizes how luminal caliber changes across the antrum to canal and where the sphincter forms a palpable, ultrasound-visible muscular hypertrophy in infants with nonbilious projectile vomiting. Adult gastric outlet obstruction from peptic ulcer scarring or malignancy is also interpreted against this same anatomy, since edema or fibrosis at the pylorus distorts the normally short canal and can efface the antral taper. Surgeons use these landmarks during pyloromyotomy, pyloroplasty, antrectomy, and reconstruction, where millimeters matter. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and gastrointestinal blocks to anchor terminology such as pyloricum and to explain why the pylorus is a functional valve rather than a simple narrowing.
