Description
Seen in anterior section, the distal stomach narrows into the pyloric canal and terminates at the pyloric sphincter (sphincter pylori) at the gastroduodenal junction. A thickened circular layer of muscularis externa forms the sphincter ring, continuous proximally with the antrum and distally with the first part of the duodenum, with the pyloric mucosa folded into a central aperture. Superior and inferior margins of the pylorus are defined by the surrounding gastric wall, while the lumen sits centrally, oriented toward the right in standard anatomical position. Control of gastric outflow is the teaching point here. Hypertrophy of the pyloric muscle in infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis narrows the channel, producing nonbilious projectile vomiting and the classic ultrasound target sign, and this sectional view mirrors the anatomy behind those findings. For adult practice, the same junction is a reference in endoscopy and surgery, where scarring from peptic ulcer disease or antral tumors can cause gastric outlet obstruction, and where pyloroplasty or distal gastrectomy requires clear appreciation of the sphincter’s muscular thickening relative to the lumen.
