Description
Arising distal to the tracheal bifurcation at the carina (bifurcatio tracheae), the right main bronchus descends inferolaterally and gives off lobar and then segmental bronchi as it enters the lung parenchyma. A right lateral profile emphasizes the anteroposterior stagger of these divisions, with proximal airway caliber decreasing as the bronchus branches distally toward defined bronchopulmonary segments. Cartilaginous support remains more apparent proximally and tapers as bronchi transition toward smaller intrapulmonary branches. Right-sided airway anatomy matters because the right main bronchus is shorter, wider, and more vertical than the left, a geometry that helps explain the common path of aspirated material and the frequent location of endobronchial foreign bodies. Segmental bronchi are the functional map for bronchoscopy and lung-sparing resection: each segmental bronchus accompanies a segmental pulmonary artery branch, while pulmonary veins course in the intersegmental planes, guiding segmentectomy margins. Clear appreciation of the branching pattern near the carinal junction also supports interpretation of chest CT and helps localize obstructing tumors, mucus plugging, or post-intubation injury.
