Colored Posterior Segment of the Right Lung

Description

Seen from a right-sided, posterolateral angle, the posterior segment of the right lung (segmentum posterius, S2) is highlighted in color within the upper lobe, extending from the apical region toward the posterior thoracic wall. Superiorly it approaches the apex of the lung beneath the cervical pleura, while inferiorly it tapers toward the oblique fissure where it neighbors the superior segment of the lower lobe (S6). Medially, the segment borders the hilar region and bronchovascular pedicle, and laterally it abuts the costal pleura along the dorsal rib cage. Orientation is clear. The dorsal (posterior) emphasis helps separate S2 from the more anterior S3 territory. Segmental anatomy matters most when the clinical question is local, and S2 is a common site for posterior upper-lobe disease patterns that layer with gravity and ventilation. Dependent consolidation in a supine patient often tracks into posterior upper-lobe segments, and aspiration patterns can overlap S2 when the patient is recumbent. Surgeons and interventional pulmonologists also lean on this map during segmentectomy planning, because the segmental bronchus (B2) and its accompanying arterial branch can be approached and divided with less parenchymal sacrifice than a lobectomy when a peripheral lesion is confined to S2. Lymphatic drainage patterns to upper paratracheal and hilar nodes also get discussed at this level.
