Description
Rendered as a small, non-enveloped icosahedral virion, the SV40 particle is represented as a near-spherical capsid built from repeating capsomeres arranged in strict radial symmetry. Pentameric units of the major capsid protein VP1 tile the outer surface in a T=7d lattice, creating the characteristic faceted pattern seen across polyomaviruses. Beneath that protein shell lies the compact core, where circular double-stranded DNA associates with host-derived histones to form a minichromosome. No lipid bilayer is present. SV40 remains a workhorse model for teaching how a DNA virus enters the nucleus, replicates episomally, and hijacks the cell cycle, and that context makes capsid architecture more than cosmetic. VP1 binds sialylated glycans on the cell surface, then the particle traffics through endosomal pathways to the endoplasmic reticulum before uncoating and nuclear import, steps that inform how related human polyomaviruses such as BK and JC behave in vivo.
