Description
Rendered as a non-enveloped picornavirus-like particle, the Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) capsid appears as a near-spherical icosahedral shell with repeating surface relief consistent with VP1, VP2, and VP3 protomers arranged into pentamers. Depressions and ridge-like mounds on the exterior suggest the characteristic picornaviral canyon region that encircles each fivefold axis, while the smoother facets between protrusions correspond to quasi-equivalent capsid domains. Blue-to-lavender color mapping separates adjacent capsid regions and implies subunit boundaries, with the genomic RNA housed deep to the protein shell and not directly visible in this exterior view. No lipid envelope is present. TMEV is a classic agent in experimental neuropathology because it produces acute encephalomyelitis and, in susceptible strains, a chronic demyelinating myelitis that models key features of multiple sclerosis, including immune-mediated damage and persistent viral presence in the central nervous system. Capsid topography matters here: receptor-binding sites and neutralizing epitopes lie on exposed loops of VP1 to VP3, and even small conformational differences at the canyon or fivefold vertices can shift tropism, antibody escape, and the balance between clearance and persistence. Size, symmetry, and surface accessibility are the story. That is why a close surface rendering earns its keep. Use this asset in virology and immunology courseware to teach picornavirus architecture, in neuroinflammation lectures to anchor the TMEV model, or in publisher figures discussing capsid-mediated entry, antigenic sites, and vaccine or monoclonal antibody targeting. It also supports grant and poster graphics where an infectious particle needs to read instantly without implying an envelope. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
