Description
Arcing from the lateral skull base into the posterior triangle of the neck, the accessory nerve (cranial nerve XI) is shown as it exits the jugular foramen and courses inferiorly and posteriorly toward the neck musculature. Its spinal rootlets are suggested along the upper cervical spinal cord, ascending through the foramen magnum before joining the cranial component, then continuing as a single trunk. In lateral profile, the nerve lies deep to the sternocleidomastoid region and then crosses obliquely toward the trapezius, with the cervical vertebrae, mandible, clavicle, and scapular contour providing clear bony landmarks for orientation. A lateral view is the one you want when teaching or planning around the posterior triangle because CN XI is superficial and exposed there, and it is the nerve most often iatrogenically injured during cervical lymph node biopsy and neck dissection. Denervation of trapezius produces the classic combination of shoulder droop, impaired scapular upward rotation, and difficulty abducting the arm above horizontal. Small nerve, big functional deficit. Use this plate in head and neck anatomy blocks to anchor the course of CN XI relative to the jugular foramen, upper cervical spine, and shoulder girdle, or in ENT and surgical training materials that cover posterior triangle dissection planes and lymphadenectomy risk. It also fits well in radiology or ultrasound teaching when correlating surface landmarks with deeper neural pathways in the lateral neck.
