Description
Frontal bone landmarks frame the superior orbit in an anterior skull perspective, centering on the frontal part of the orbital margin (supraorbital rim). The ridge runs transversely above the orbital aperture from the medial region near the nasion and glabella toward the lateral zygomatic process of the frontal bone, where it meets the frontozygomatic suture. Along the superior margin, the supraorbital notch or foramen is typically visible near the junction of the medial and middle thirds, transmitting the supraorbital nerve and vessels onto the forehead. Bone surface contour is emphasized. An accurate read of the supraorbital rim matters in trauma, oculoplastics, and craniofacial surgery because small changes in this bony arc alter globe protection, eyelid support, and brow position, and because fractures often track through the rim into the orbital roof and frontal sinus with potential complications such as orbital hematoma, sinus outflow obstruction, or supraorbital nerve hypoesthesia. The fixed anterior orientation helps you teach laterality and palpable landmarks, including the relationship of the rim to the superomedial orbit (near the trochlear fossa region) and the superolateral orbital roof (near the lacrimal gland fossa), without distracting sectional cuts. The lighting and edge definition make the orbital margin easy to trace against the surrounding frontal squama and upper orbital aperture.
