Description
Supraorbital rim (margo supraorbitalis) of the frontal bone forms the superior boundary of the orbital aperture, seen here in a lateral skull perspective as a thickened bony ridge overlying the eye socket. Laterally, the margin approaches the frontozygomatic region where the frontal bone meets the zygomatic bone at the lateral orbital rim; medially, it continues toward the frontonasal area and the superomedial orbit. The external surface above the margin corresponds to the superciliary arch, while the internal aspect transitions into the orbital plate of the frontal bone that roofs the orbit. Bone is unforgiving. Clinically, the supraorbital margin is a high-yield landmark in periorbital trauma because fractures of the superior orbital rim can extend into the frontal sinus and anterior cranial fossa, changing both the repair strategy and the risk profile for cerebrospinal fluid leak. Surgical planning for brow lift approaches, upper blepharoplasty, and frontal sinus access depends on appreciating the rim’s curvature and its relationship to the frontal sinus anterior table. The contour at the supraorbital notch or foramen region (when present) matters for supraorbital neurovascular preservation and for local anesthetic blocks of the supraorbital nerve, a common adjunct in laceration repair of the forehead and eyebrow.
