Description
Running along the anterolateral arm and forearm, the musculocutaneous nerve is traced as it pierces the coracobrachialis, then courses between biceps brachii and brachialis before continuing distally as the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve. At the elbow, the nerve emerges lateral to the biceps tendon and anterior to the brachialis, then descends in the superficial fascia along the radial (lateral) border of the forearm. A close relationship with the cephalic vein is suggested in the proximal forearm, while the brachial artery and its bifurcation into radial and ulnar arteries provide anterior vascular landmarks for orientation. Skin territory matters. Clinically, this anterior pathway explains why venipuncture or cannulation of the cephalic vein at the cubital fossa can produce dysesthesia over the lateral forearm, and why isolated sensory loss in that distribution points away from median or radial nerve entrapment. The illustration also supports teaching of musculocutaneous neuropathy after shoulder traction injuries or surgical approaches around the coracoid process, where the nerve’s early course through coracobrachialis becomes a practical hazard. Distal symptoms can mimic de Quervain-related radial sensory complaints, so showing the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve separately helps refine the differential.
