Description
Sectioned through the male kidney in an anterior-oriented cross section, the renal cortex forms the peripheral rim around the medullary pyramids, which converge at the papillae into the minor and major calyces and then the renal pelvis. Lymphatic vessels track with the renal artery and renal vein through the renal sinus, then concentrate at the renal hilum alongside the proximal ureter. Perihilar lymph nodes sit medial to the renal parenchyma at the point where collecting system, vessels, and lymphatics meet. A tight corridor of anatomy. Perihilar renal lymphatics matter because they explain how disease leaves the kidney. Renal cell carcinoma commonly spreads first to the renal hilar and para-aortic (lumbar) nodes, and lymphatic channels that parallel the renal vein help account for nodal disease that can appear with limited capsular involvement. The same anatomy guides retroperitoneal surgery and staging, where dissection around the hilum risks lymphatic leakage and postoperative chylous drainage if larger trunks are disrupted. Use this illustration in renal anatomy teaching for gross anatomy and urology blocks, or in oncology and radiology texts when correlating cross-sectional anatomy with CT or MRI assessment of renal hilar adenopathy.
