Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male vertebral column extends inferiorly from the skull base, with the occipital bone articulating at the atlanto-occipital joints of C1 (atlas) and the dens of C2 (axis) positioned immediately posterior to the anterior arch of the atlas. Cervical vertebrae C3 to C7 align superior to the thoracic spine, where T1 to T12 form the posterior boundary of the thorax and transition inferiorly into the larger lumbar bodies L1 to L5. Caudally, the sacrum lies posterior to the pelvic cavity and continues into the coccyx, while the normal sagittal curves are evident as cervical and lumbar lordosis and thoracic and sacral kyphosis. Alignment matters. Because the skull is included, this view works well for teaching global sagittal balance, including the relationship between head position and the cervical spine. Lateral curvature and junctional regions are where pathology declares itself: C5 to C7 degenerative disc disease and cervical spondylosis often drive radiculopathy, the thoracolumbar junction (T12 to L1) is a common site for compression fractures, and L4 to L5 and L5 to S1 are frequent levels of disc herniation affecting the L5 and S1 nerve roots. It also supports discussions of hyperlordosis, Scheuermann-type thoracic kyphosis, and spondylolisthesis, conditions typically assessed on lateral radiographs using the same anatomical landmarks. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and kinesiology curricula to anchor terminology (atlas, axis, sacrum) and normal spinal curvatures, or in orthopedics, neurosurgery, and physical therapy materials when explaining lateral spine X-ray interpretation, postural assessment, and common degenerative patterns.
