Description
Sectioned in a quarter cut, the testis is opened to expose the parenchyma while preserving the continuity of the coverings and excurrent ducts. The tunica vaginalis surrounds the organ externally, with the denser tunica albuginea forming the fibrous capsule immediately deep to it, and septa radiating inward toward the mediastinum testis. Posterolaterally, the epididymis lies applied to the testicular surface, its head positioned superiorly, body descending along the posterior border, and tail turning inferiorly to become the ductus deferens as it courses proximally within the spermatic cord. Coiled seminiferous tubules fill the lobules, converging toward the rete testis before draining into efferent ductules at the epididymal head. Clear orientation. This cut is the teaching sweet spot for linking spermatogenesis to sperm transport and to sites of obstruction. In vasectomy counseling and pathology correlation, seeing the ductus deferens arising from the epididymal tail helps explain why post-vasectomy pain can relate to epididymal congestion and sperm granuloma formation near the transection site.
