Description
Seen in transverse section, the testis appears as a near-circular organ bounded by the tunica albuginea, with fibrous septa radiating inward to partition the parenchyma into lobules. Coiled seminiferous tubules occupy most of the section, while straighter tubules converge toward the mediastinum testis, where the rete testis forms a compact channel network. Along the posterolateral margin, the expected relationship is to the epididymis and efferent ductules, even if they sit just outside the plane of section. Simple geometry, complex histology. Orientation in this cut matters because it mirrors how the testis is assessed on ultrasound for acute scrotal pain, infertility workups, and incidental masses. Septal architecture and the central mediastinum are the landmarks that help distinguish a true intratesticular lesion from an extratesticular process arising in the epididymis, and they also explain why tumors, hematomas, or segmental infarcts tend to respect lobular boundaries.
