Description
Presented in lateral cut section, the testis is opened to reveal the parenchyma organized into lobules of seminiferous tubules converging toward the mediastinum testis and rete testis. The tunica albuginea forms the dense, white fibrous capsule at the periphery, while the epididymis sits posterolateral to the testis with its head (caput) superior, body along the posterior border, and tail (cauda) tapering inferiorly toward the ductus deferens. Arterial inflow from the testicular artery and venous drainage into the pampiniform plexus are represented as red and blue vessels coursing in the spermatic cord and along the posterior aspect near the epididymis. Orientation is clear. A lateral section like this is the clearest way to teach intratesticular outflow, from seminiferous tubules through straight tubules to the rete testis and then via efferent ductules into the epididymal head. That pathway matters in obstructive azoospermia and after vasectomy reversal planning, where distinguishing epididymal obstruction from intratesticular failure changes the operative strategy. Vascular relationships are equally practical: segmental compromise of the testicular artery or venous congestion in varicocele can affect spermatogenesis long before gross atrophy appears.
