Description
Presented as a cut section through the testis (orchis), the illustration exposes the dense parenchyma beneath the tunica albuginea and the adjacent thickening of the mediastinum testis along the posterior aspect. From this posterior ridge, multiple seminiferous tubules converge into straight tubules and the rete testis, with efferent ductules coursing superiorly and laterally toward the head of the epididymis. Lobules radiate from the mediastinum toward the anterior and lateral convexity, separated by delicate septa. Orientation is shown in profile. For teaching and clinical correlation, this sectional anatomy clarifies why lesions behave differently depending on compartment: most germ cell tumors arise within seminiferous tubules, while epididymal cysts and spermatoceles originate from the efferent ducts or epididymal duct system and present posterior-superior to the testis. The relationship of the mediastinum and rete testis to the posterior border also matters in scrotal ultrasound, where a prominent mediastinum can mimic a linear intratesticular lesion, and in staging where intratesticular masses are separated from paratesticular processes. A common diagnostic pitfall.
