Description
A frontal cut section through the testis (orchis) reveals the dense tunica albuginea at the periphery sending fibrous septa inward to subdivide the parenchyma into wedge-shaped lobuli testis. Those septa converge posteriorly toward the mediastinum testis, where the rete testis sits as a collecting network before efferent ductules exit superiorly to the caput epididymidis. Within each lobule, coiled tubuli seminiferi occupy the bulk of the gland, with straighter segments (tubuli recti) directed toward the mediastinum. Clear compartmental anatomy. Seeing the septal architecture matters because it explains how spermatogenic tissue is organized and how pathology respects, or violates, those boundaries. Segmental testicular infarction and focal orchitis can track along septa, while most germ cell tumors arise from within seminiferous tubules and spread toward the rete testis, a route that influences staging and surgical planning. For surgeons, the mediastinum testis is also the structure to avoid during testis-sparing surgery for small, benign-appearing masses, since violating it risks compromising outflow through the rete and efferent ducts.
