Description
Sectioned testis anatomy fills the frame, bounded peripherally by the dense tunica albuginea that forms the thick fibrous capsule immediately deep to the visceral layer of tunica vaginalis. Septa extend inward from the capsule toward the mediastinum testis on the posterior aspect, partitioning the parenchyma into lobules that contain tightly coiled seminiferous tubules; these tubules converge proximally into straight tubules and the rete testis within the mediastinum. Posterolateral to the testicular tissue, the head of the epididymis relates to the superior pole and receives efferent ductules, while vascular profiles of the testicular artery and pampiniform plexus lie more superior and posterior as they approach the spermatic cord. Orientation matters. A cut section is the working view for correlating gross anatomy with common scrotal pathology. Intratesticular masses on ultrasound typically arise from the seminiferous epithelium and distort the normal lobular pattern, while benign extratesticular lesions often track along the epididymis and spermatic cord rather than breaching the tunica albuginea. The capsule itself provides a useful surgical and staging landmark in testicular cancer, where invasion beyond tunica albuginea into tunica vaginalis or spermatic cord changes management, and it also frames the clinical logic of hematocele after blunt trauma.
