Description
Oriented in a lateral cut section of the testis, the mediastinum testis sits along the posterior border as a thickened longitudinal ridge of tunica albuginea, with fibrous septa radiating anteriorly and laterally to subdivide the parenchyma into lobuli testis. Each septum forms a thin partition that runs from the mediastinum toward the capsular wall, creating wedge-shaped compartments separated by delicate connective tissue membranes. At the periphery, the tunica albuginea outlines the organ, while the internal partitions converge posteriorly where the rete testis would be expected within the mediastinum. Clean geometry. That posterior convergence is the point of clinical interest, because the rete testis and efferent ductules lie at the hilum-like region where cystic dilatation, post-inflammatory scarring, or iatrogenic injury can obstruct sperm transport. Surgeons also use these septal planes as orientation when approaching intratesticular lesions; a mass that distorts or crosses septa can suggest infiltrative growth rather than a focal process confined to one lobule.
