Anterior Section of the Right Ventricle

Description

Anteriorly, the right ventricle forms most of the sternocostal surface of the heart, with the anterior wall of the right ventricular myocardium curving superiorly toward the right ventricular outflow tract (infundibulum, conus arteriosus). Superior and slightly leftward sits the pulmonary valve leading into the pulmonary trunk, while the right atrium lies more to the right, separated from the ventricle by the atrioventricular groove. Medially, the interventricular septum approaches the left ventricle; laterally, the acute (inferior) margin of the heart is defined largely by the right ventricle. Great vessels such as the ascending aorta and the superior vena cava are expected in close superior relation, consistent with an in situ thoracic context. This anterior right ventricular section matters because it is the operative and imaging face of the RV: the infundibulum and pulmonary valve are key landmarks in congenital heart disease and its repair, including tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary stenosis. The RV free wall and outflow tract also anchor common echocardiographic assessment of RV size and systolic function, and they sit directly behind the sternum where blunt trauma and sternal entry can place the chamber at risk.
