Description
Posteriorly, the arterial and venous trunks track along the vertebral column, with the descending thoracic aorta continuing as the abdominal aorta slightly left of midline while the inferior vena cava ascends to the right of the aorta. Segmental posterior intercostal and lumbar vessels radiate laterally from the midline, and the common iliac arteries and veins diverge inferiorly into the pelvis before continuing into the lower limbs as the external iliac, femoral, and popliteal vessels. Superiorly, subclavian and axillary vessels sweep laterally into the upper limbs, while the vertebral venous plexus and paravertebral pathways are suggested against a translucent spine and posterior thoracic wall. Arteries are rendered in red and veins in blue for fast orientation. A posterior vascular view is the clearest way to teach the relationship of the great vessels to the spine and paraspinal soft tissues, which is where many procedural complications originate. Think central venous catheterization and pacemaker lead placement where aberrant venous anatomy, persistent left superior vena cava, or thrombosis can change the expected course, and think retroperitoneal hemorrhage where the aorta, inferior vena cava, and iliac vessels lie close to the vertebral bodies and psoas. Venous return pathways matter here. The azygos system and vertebral venous plexuses are common collateral routes in caval obstruction and also help explain metastatic spread to the spine. Use this artwork for gross anatomy and radiographic anatomy teaching when correlating posterior X-ray style silhouettes with true vessel topology, or for surgical texts covering posterior thoracic approaches, retroperitoneal exposure, and vascular trauma patterns.
