Description
Rendered in anterior anatomical position, the semi-transparent torso and head of a male child reveal the heart in the middle mediastinum, slightly left of the midsagittal plane, with the great vessels emerging superiorly and coursing into the neck and upper limbs. The aortic arch gives rise to the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery, while the superior vena cava descends on the right to the right atrium and the brachiocephalic veins converge just posterior to the manubrium. Red arterial and blue venous trees track laterally along the clavicles into the axillary region and distally down the upper extremities, and cranially into the carotid and jugular systems of the neck and face. Color coding is clear. For pediatric teaching, this view gets the relationships right: heart position relative to the sternum and ribs, the anterior course of the great veins, and the early branching pattern that guides central access and surgery. It also supports common clinical conversations around congenital heart disease, where altered great-vessel relationships (for example, transposition of the great arteries or coarctation at the aortic isthmus) change perfusion patterns and can be explained by comparing expected arterial routes to the upper body and head.
