Description
Presented in a lateral cut section of an adult male skull, the calvaria is partially removed to expose the cranial cavity and the dura mater lining its inner table. The dura forms a tough meningeal layer immediately deep to the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital bones, with a sharp interface at the cut margin between bone and membrane. Medially, the meningeal envelope conforms to the cerebral convexity, while inferiorly the relationship to the middle cranial fossa and skull base contours is suggested by the remaining temporal region and facial skeleton. Suture lines and bony landmarks remain readable around the cranial window. Dura mater matters because it is the surgically encountered boundary that must be separated from bone during craniotomy and elevated safely off the inner table without tearing bridging veins or stripping too aggressively near dural venous sinuses. The adherence between periosteal dura and calvaria also explains the typical lens shaped (biconvex) contour of an epidural hematoma after middle meningeal artery injury, contrasted with subdural blood tracking along the meningeal layer. A clean view of dura against bone is a good way to teach that the cranial dura has two layers, periosteal and meningeal, even when the layers are not visibly separated except at venous sinuses. Neurosurgery and anatomy faculty can use this plate for teaching craniotomy planes, meningeal coverings, and the surface anatomy of the cranial vault in gross anatomy, head and neck, or neuroanatomy courses. It also fits patient education materials and clinical publishing on traumatic intracranial hemorrhage, skull fractures, and operative exposure of the cranial cavity.
