Description
Lateral pterygoid plate of the sphenoid forms the lateral lamina of the pterygoid process, descending inferiorly from the body and greater wing junction toward the posterior maxilla. Medial to it lies the pterygoid fossa, bounded by the medial pterygoid plate, while its lateral surface contributes to the medial wall of the infratemporal fossa. Superiorly, the plate sits just inferior to the foramina region of the greater wing (foramen ovale and foramen spinosum area), a useful orientation when reading the skull base in a fixed inferolateral perspective. Bone margins are sharp. Muscle attachments give this plate its day-to-day clinical relevance: the lateral pterygoid commonly takes origin from its lateral surface (inferior head), and the medial pterygoid takes origin from its medial surface within the pterygoid fossa, so the plate becomes a bony index for masticatory mechanics and temporomandibular joint dysfunction patterns. Fractures through the pterygoid plates are also a defining sign in Le Fort midface injuries, and an isolated view of the sphenoid helps learners recognize that pterygoid plate disruption implies high-energy craniofacial trauma rather than a local alveolar fracture. Spatially, this illustration offers a practical teaching relationship between the pterygoid process and the adjacent skull base foramina used as landmarks for mandibular nerve (V3) anatomy.
