Description
Lateral pterygoid plate of the sphenoid occupies the lateral lamina of the pterygoid process in this inferior view of the cranial base. Its broad bony sheet lies lateral to the medial pterygoid plate and defines the lateral wall of the pterygoid fossa, with the plate’s inferior margin approaching the region where the pyramidal process of the palatine bone and the posterior maxilla contribute to the pterygomaxillary area. Superiorly, the plate blends into the body and greater wing of the sphenoid toward the infratemporal surface, placing it in close anatomic neighborhood to the foramen ovale and foramen spinosum even when those foramina sit just outside the immediate focus. A sharp landmark. Attachment anatomy drives the clinical relevance here: the lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate provides origin for the lateral pterygoid muscle, while the medial surface contributes to the origin of the medial pterygoid, so disruption of this plate can alter mandibular excursion and occlusal mechanics after midface trauma. Pterygoid process involvement is a common feature of Le Fort fracture patterns, and an inferior perspective helps clarify why fractures that split the pterygoid plates can propagate between the maxilla, palatine bone, and sphenoid at the skull base. The isolated emphasis on a single lamina makes the thinness and curvature of the plate easier to teach than in a full skull base composite.
