Description
Beneath the plantar skin of the male foot, the oblique head of adductor hallucis is highlighted as a deep muscle belly coursing anteromedially from the bases of the second to fourth metatarsals and adjacent tarsal region toward the lateral side of the hallux. Along its path it lies plantar to the metatarsal shafts and interossei, with the long flexor tendons more centrally placed and the first metatarsal and proximal phalanx of the great toe positioned anteriorly as the insertional target. A lateral side perspective also brings the calcaneus, cuboid, and the longitudinal arch into view, framing how this muscle spans the midfoot to influence the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Deep. Precise. Functionally, the oblique head helps adduct the hallux and stabilizes the forefoot during late stance, acting across the sesamoid apparatus and the lateral aspect of the proximal phalanx via its conjoined insertion with the lateral sesamoid and fibular side of the base.
