Description

Seen in lateral profile, the posterior minor rectus capitis (rectus capitis posterior minor) is highlighted deep in the suboccipital region, spanning from the posterior tubercle of the atlas (C1) to the medial part of the inferior nuchal line on the occipital bone. Superiorly it abuts the occipital squama, while inferiorly it sits immediately over the posterior arch of C1, medial to the rectus capitis posterior major and deep to the semispinalis capitis that typically blankets the suboccipital muscles. The temporal bone, mandible with the temporomandibular joint, hyoid, upper clavicle, and the cervical vertebral column including the atlas and axis provide bony context for the muscle’s short, vertical fiber direction.
