Description
Anterior torso anatomy of a prepubertal girl is rendered with a translucent body wall, exposing the pelvic viscera within the lower abdomen. Centrally in the lesser pelvis sits the uterus, with the cervix continuous inferiorly toward the vaginal canal, and the uterine tubes extending laterally toward the ovaries along the broad ligament. Superior to the uterus, small bowel loops and portions of the colon occupy the abdominal cavity, while the bladder lies anterior to the uterus in the retropubic space. Proportions reflect a pediatric configuration, with the uterus relatively small and positioned more superiorly than in the adult pelvis. Pediatric female reproductive anatomy is not just a scaled-down adult pattern, and that difference drives clinical interpretation. This view helps clarify why ultrasound assessment of uterine size and ovarian volume matters in suspected precocious puberty, primary amenorrhea, or disorders of sex development, and why adnexal torsion can present with nonspecific abdominal pain when the ovaries sit high in the abdomen. The spatial relationship between bladder, uterus, and bowel also supports teaching of common pitfalls in pelvic imaging and in interpreting lower abdominal tenderness in girls.
