Reticulotegmental nucleus of the pons sits as a compact neuronal mass within the ventral pontine tegmentum, positioned dorsal to the basilar (ventral) pons and ventral to the fourth ventricle and periventricular gray. Medial placement near the midline reticular formation is emphasized, with adjacent longitudinal tracts and tegmental fields framing it as a discrete island of gray matter within surrounding white matter. Lateral to it, the region transitions toward the tegmental components approaching the middle cerebellar peduncle, while superior and inferior continuity links it with neighboring pontine reticular nuclei within the brainstem. Boundaries are crisp. Clinically, the reticulotegmental nucleus is a pragmatic landmark when teaching brainstem circuitry for eye movements, since it participates in pontocerebellar and oculomotor control pathways that influence saccades, smooth pursuit, and gaze holding via connections with the cerebellar vermis and flocculonodular lobe.
