Description
Arising from the anterolateral aspect of the pons, the sensory root of the trigeminal nerve (CN V) courses anteriorly toward the trigeminal (semilunar, Gasserian) ganglion seated in Meckel’s cave near the apex of the petrous temporal bone. On this inferior (basal) view of the male brain, adjacent cranial nerves are positioned in their expected relationships, with the optic nerves and optic chiasm lying anterosuperior to the interpeduncular region and the olfactory bulbs and tracts aligned along the inferior frontal lobes. The brainstem anchors the composition posteriorly and medially, while the pituitary gland occupies the midline in the sella region. Orientation is clear. Emphasizing the trigeminal sensory root matters because it is the entry point for facial somatic afferents and the structure targeted indirectly in percutaneous procedures for trigeminal neuralgia, including radiofrequency rhizotomy and balloon compression at the level of the trigeminal ganglion. From an inferior perspective you can appreciate how short the cisternal segment is between the pons and Meckel’s cave, a relationship that frames neurovascular compression at the root entry zone, most often by the superior cerebellar artery. It is also the corridor implicated in skull base pathology, such as meningioma or schwannoma involving the trigeminal ganglion and the porus trigeminus. Neurology and neuroanatomy courses use this plate to teach basal cranial nerve layout and to distinguish the trigeminal sensory root from nearby CN III, IV, VI, and the facial-vestibulocochlear complex at the pontomedullary junction. Neurosurgical atlases and ENT or skull base lectures can pair it with axial MRI or CT cisternography when discussing Meckel’s cave lesions and pain syndromes mapped to V1, V2, and V3 distributions.
