Description
Running in the superficial fascia of the male upper limb, the superficial lymphatic vessels accompany the major cutaneous veins of the arm, with channels paralleling the cephalic vein on the lateral (radial) side and the basilic vein on the medial (ulnar) side. Proximally, these collectors converge toward the axilla, where superficial drainage joins the axillary lymph nodes along the inferior border of pectoralis minor. Muscular landmarks such as the deltoid and trapezius frame the shoulder region, while the clavicle and scapula orient the anterior and posterior contours of the axillary inlet. Clinically, this arrangement explains why cutaneous infection or melanoma on the lateral hand and forearm often tracks with the cephalic pathway toward apical axillary nodes, whereas medial forearm and arm lesions more often follow the basilic route to humeral (lateral) axillary nodes. Sentinel lymph node mapping in breast cancer and upper-limb melanoma relies on these predictable superficial channels, and disruption during axillary dissection can contribute to secondary lymphedema. Surface anatomy matters here. Palpable cords, lymphangitic streaking, and postoperative swelling all correlate with the same superficial trajectories shown alongside the veins. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and regional anatomy teaching to connect superficial venous landmarks to lymphatic drainage patterns in the upper extremity, or in surgical education materials covering axillary node levels, sentinel node biopsy, and risk reduction for lymphedema.
