Description
Prominent in the anterior thorax, the left subclavian artery courses laterally beneath the clavicle and over the first rib, continuing as the axillary artery as it enters the axilla. From the axillary segment, the vessel descends along the medial aspect of the proximal humerus toward the brachial artery, with early branches suggested toward the shoulder girdle and thoracic wall. Surrounding skeletal landmarks include the clavicle anteriorly, the ribs and costal cartilages forming the anterior thoracic cage, and the lateral border of the scapula framing the proximal limb. Orientation stays firmly left sided. Clear depiction of the subclavian to axillary transition matters because it sits at the intersection of thoracic outlet anatomy and upper-extremity perfusion, where compression can occur between the clavicle and first rib or beneath pectoralis minor, producing arterial thoracic outlet syndrome with post-stenotic dilation or distal embolization.
