Description
Lumbar vertebral body anatomy centers on the annular epiphysis, the dense peripheral ring of bone at the superior and inferior margins of the vertebral endplate. Along the circumference of the vertebral body, this ring frames the central cartilaginous endplate and provides the bony interface for the outer lamellae of the annulus fibrosus, while the nucleus pulposus lies more medially within the intervertebral disc. Anteriorly and posteriorly, the annular epiphysis borders the disc space where the anterior longitudinal ligament and posterior longitudinal ligament course along the vertebral bodies. A hard edge. Clinically, the annular epiphysis matters because it is the traction and attachment zone for disc fibers (via Sharpey-type insertions) and a common site of failure at the osteochondral junction during adolescence and early adulthood.
