Description
Posterior intercondylar area of the tibia lies on the superior aspect of the proximal tibia, centered between the medial and lateral tibial condyles and set behind the intercondylar eminence (tibial spines). From this fixed posteriorly oriented plateau view, the irregular depressed surface is framed by the posterior margins of the medial and lateral articular facets, with the intercondylar spines rising anterior to it and the cortical rim of the tibial plateau forming a shallow posterior border. Subtle topography is emphasized, including the transition from hyaline cartilage bearing surfaces to the nonarticular intercondylar region, where ligamentous and meniscal attachments concentrate. Bone landmarks matter here. Orthopedic teaching often reduces cruciate anatomy to femoral footprints, but the tibial side is where arthroscopists and reconstructive surgeons must be exact: the posterior cruciate ligament inserts on the posterior intercondylar area just inferior to the articular surface, while the posterior roots of the medial and lateral menisci sit close to the intercondylar region and can be injured or overlooked in multiligament trauma. The posterior orientation helps clarify why a posterior tibial slope or a marginal fracture can alter knee kinematics and graft tensioning, and why tibial plateau fractures extending into the intercondylar region may destabilize the PCL even when the condylar surfaces appear congruent. Lighting that differentiates the depressed intercondylar surface from the elevated spines supports accurate discussion of footprint placement and bony avulsion patterns.
