Description
Superior frontal gyrus occupies the dorsalmost convexity of the frontal lobe, extending anteroposteriorly along the superolateral surface of the cerebrum. Its inferior border is defined by the superior frontal sulcus, separating it from the middle frontal gyrus, while posteriorly it approaches the precentral sulcus and the anterior margin of the precentral gyrus. Near the superior margin it curves toward the interhemispheric (longitudinal) fissure, and on the medial surface it continues into cortex adjacent to the cingulate sulcus. Gyri and sulci are sharply contoured. Functionally, the superior frontal gyrus bridges premotor and prefrontal domains, with medial portions including supplementary motor area territory and more anterior regions contributing to executive control and attention networks within the central nervous system. That anatomy becomes clinically tangible in anterior cerebral artery infarcts or parasagittal meningiomas, where medial superior frontal involvement can produce akinetic mutism, impaired initiation, or contralateral lower extremity motor deficits, even when lateral frontal language areas are spared. The fixed cortical surface view supports teaching of lobar landmarks and sulcal boundaries that guide lesion localization on cross sectional imaging and during frontal craniotomy planning. Surface anatomy matters. Use this illustration in neuroanatomy and neuroscience curricula to orient students to frontal lobe gyri, or in neurosurgery and neuroradiology publications discussing frontal tumor corridors, parasagittal approaches, or preoperative mapping targets for transcranial magnetic stimulation.
