Description
Arising from the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus, the anterior meniscofemoral ligament (ligament of Humphry) courses superiorly and medially to reach the lateral surface of the medial femoral condyle within the intercondylar notch. From a posterior view of the male knee joint, it appears as a slender fibrous band crossing anterior to the posterior cruciate ligament, with the tibial plateau and its articular cartilage inferiorly and the distal femoral condyles superiorly. The menisci sit between femur and tibia, while the fibular head remains lateral and distal, helping orient the viewer to the posterolateral corner. That crossing relationship matters. On MRI and during arthroscopy, the meniscofemoral ligaments can mimic or obscure posterior cruciate ligament fibers, and confusion here can lead to overcalling a PCL tear or missing an associated lateral meniscal root injury. A clear posterior perspective also reinforces how the anterior meniscofemoral ligament tethers the lateral meniscus to the femur, a stabilizing restraint that becomes clinically relevant in PCL-deficient knees where meniscofemoral ligament hypertrophy is sometimes encountered. Small structure, big diagnostic footprint.
