Description

Seen from the posterior aspect of a male knee, the femoral condyles frame the intercondylar notch while the posterior cruciate ligament courses centrally toward the posterior intercondylar area of the tibia. Anterior to the PCL, the anterior cruciate ligament (ligamentum cruciatum anterius) is shown disrupted, with frayed fibers and loss of normal taut obliquity from the posteromedial aspect of the lateral femoral condyle toward the anterior intercondylar area. The tibial plateau lies inferior, with the medial and lateral menisci interposed between femur and tibia, and the popliteal fossa sits posterior to the joint capsule. A posterior perspective matters because it mirrors what you appreciate during posterior compartment assessment in arthroscopy and helps clarify how an ACL tear alters the three-dimensional balance between the cruciate ligaments. Loss of ACL restraint permits anterior translation of the tibia relative to the femur and contributes to a pivot-shift mechanism, a pattern tied to lateral meniscal tears and chondral injury on the lateral femoral condyle.
