Posterior to the knee, the fibrous joint capsule spans from the distal femur to the proximal tibia, enclosing the synovial cavity and reflecting around the articular cartilage at the femoral condyles and tibial plateaus. Superficial fibers blend with the oblique popliteal ligament, a posterior expansion of the semimembranosus tendon that courses superolateral across the capsule. Laterally, reinforcement aligns with the arcuate popliteal ligament near the fibular head, positioned posterolateral to the tibial plateau and adjacent to the tendon of popliteus as it enters the joint capsule. Posterior capsular anatomy matters because this is where stability and access intersect.
