Description
Seen in lateral profile, the occipital bone and foramen magnum sit superior to the atlas (C1), with the occipital condyle articulating against the superior articular facet of C1 to form the atlantooccipital joint. The joint capsule outlines this condylar junction as a thin fibrous envelope spanning from the margin of the occipital condyle to the rim of the atlas, positioned deep to the suboccipital soft tissues. Inferiorly and slightly anterior, the axis (C2) and its relationship to the atlas are suggested, with the remaining cervical vertebrae (C3 to C7) stacked caudally with intervertebral discs separating the vertebral bodies.
