Shown in lateral profile, the male head and upper neck reveal the temporalis occupying the temporal fossa superior to the zygomatic arch, with the masseter positioned more inferiorly along the lateral ramus of the mandible. Anteriorly, orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure and orbicularis oris surrounds the oral fissure, while the buccinator lies deep in the cheek against the maxilla and mandible. Posteroinferiorly, sternocleidomastoid descends from the mastoid process toward the manubrium and clavicle, framing the parotid and upper cervical region. Superimposed neural elements course across these muscle planes, consistent with branching cranial nerves and peripheral axons distributing toward the temple, cheek, and perioral tissues. Lateral head anatomy is where small positional errors have big consequences, and this view aligns with how clinicians encounter the region during parotid surgery, temporomandibular joint exposure, and facial trauma repair. The facial nerve (CN VII) leaves the stylomastoid foramen and forms the parotid plexus before sending temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical branches across the masseter and into the muscles of facial expression, a pattern that explains postoperative facial weakness when the plane is wrong.
