Description
Centered in an anterior perspective, the atlas (C1) appears as a ring-shaped cervical vertebra with a stout anterior arch spanning between the right and left lateral masses. Medial on the anterior arch, the anterior tubercle projects as a palpable landmark, while the smooth facet on the posterior surface of the anterior arch (for the dens of C2) sits just behind it. Laterally, the deep lateral masses dominate the silhouette, with the superior articular facets oriented to receive the occipital condyles and the inferior articular facets directed toward the axis. No vertebral body is present. That absence defines C1. This anterior view matters when you are teaching why the craniovertebral junction behaves differently from the rest of the cervical spine, and why injury patterns here can be unstable without obvious deformity on physical exam. Jefferson burst fractures classically split the anterior and posterior arches after axial loading, and widening of the lateral masses on open-mouth radiographs flags disruption of the transverse ligament. Surgeons also rely on the lateral mass as a fixation target in C1–C2 instrumentation, where millimeters matter around the vertebral artery groove posteriorly and the spinal canal centrally. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal anatomy courses to contrast C1 with typical cervical vertebrae, or in radiology and spine surgery teaching files to orient learners to open-mouth odontoid, CT axial, and 3D reconstruction correlations.
