Viewed from the posterior aspect of an adult male cerebrum, the basal ganglia appear as paired deep gray matter masses embedded within the telencephalon, rendered in brown against the surrounding cerebral tissue. Each complex is positioned lateral to the thalamic region and medial to the insular and opercular cortex, with the lentiform nucleus (putamen laterally, globus pallidus medially) lying anterolateral to the caudate nucleus as it sweeps around the lateral ventricle. From this back-facing perspective, the bilateral symmetry of the nuclei is easy to appreciate, along with their depth relative to the posterior cerebral cortex and brainstem axis.
