Description
Running in the midline of the anterior abdomen, the abdominal aorta descends slightly left of center while the inferior vena cava ascends on the right, with paired renal vessels crossing laterally toward the kidneys and the common iliac arteries and veins diverging inferiorly into the pelvis. From the proximal aorta, the celiac trunk, superior mesenteric artery, and inferior mesenteric artery project anteriorly and fan into smaller visceral branches that occupy the epigastric and umbilical regions. Superficial vessels also read clearly in this projection, including the inferior epigastric arteries ascending from the external iliac arteries and the superficial epigastric and superficial circumflex iliac vessels tracking within the anterior abdominal wall toward the inguinal region. Arterioles and capillary beds fill the intervening tissue planes, visually linking named trunks to end-organ perfusion. An anterior, semi-transparent vascular overlay is the teaching angle most clinicians recognize from angiographic orientation, and it helps map midline trunks to quadrant-based abdominal pain and bleeding patterns. The celiac, superior mesenteric, and inferior mesenteric territories are a core concept in mesenteric ischemia and in planning embolization for gastrointestinal hemorrhage, because collateral pathways (pancreaticoduodenal arcades, marginal artery of Drummond) can maintain flow or, in shock, fail abruptly. The relationship of the inferior epigastric vessels to the rectus abdominis matters in laparoscopic port placement and in avoiding abdominal wall hematoma. Landmarks matter.
