Description
Running along the radial border of the forearm, the brachioradialis forms a superficial strap from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus toward the distal radius, its belly broad proximally and narrowing into a tendon that reaches the radial styloid process just proximal to the wrist joint. From a medial viewpoint, the muscle sits anterior to the lateral intermuscular septum and remains lateral to the ulna, with the radius visible deep to its distal tendon as it approaches the radial-sided carpus and metacarpals. Proximally at the elbow, its contour frames the lateral margin of the cubital fossa while the humeroradial and humeroulnar articulations establish the bony alignment behind it. Clear bony landmarks. Brachioradialis matters because it is the workhorse elbow flexor when the forearm rests in mid-pronation, a position that comes up in functional testing and in splinting after elbow injury. Its relationship to the radial nerve is the teaching point: the nerve passes anterior to the lateral epicondylar region and divides near the radial head, with the deep branch entering the supinator and the superficial radial nerve traveling deep to brachioradialis before emerging distally between brachioradialis and extensor carpi radialis longus. That corridor is where clinicians localize radial tunnel syndrome and where sensory symptoms over the dorsoradial hand can be traced back to irritation of the superficial radial nerve.
