Description
Running along the lateral forearm, the brachioradialis forms a prominent superficial strap from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus to the distal radius near the radial styloid. From a posterior perspective beneath the skin of an adult male, its muscle belly sits anterolateral to the main extensor mass, with extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis immediately posterior and slightly medial, and extensor digitorum more centrally over the dorsum of the forearm. Distally, the brachioradialis tendon tracks toward the radial side of the wrist, lying lateral to the tendons that pass under the extensor retinaculum and adjacent to the bony contours of the radius, ulna, carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges. Clear landmarks. This angle matters because the brachioradialis is the lateral border of the cubital fossa and a frequent surface landmark when teaching elbow flexion in neutral forearm rotation and when orienting to the radial side of the forearm. Its relationship to the radial nerve is clinically relevant: the deep branch enters the supinator proximally (radial tunnel), while the superficial branch becomes subcutaneous in the distal forearm near the brachioradialis tendon, a common site of irritation or entrapment that can mimic lateral epicondylitis pain. Orthopedic exposure of the distal radius and radial styloid, including fixation of distal radius fractures, also relies on recognizing the brachioradialis tendon and its pull on the radial styloid fragment.
