Description

Arising from the scapular venous network on the posterior thoracic wall, the circumflex scapular vein courses laterally and wraps around the lateral (axillary) border of the scapula, passing through the triangular space bounded superiorly by teres minor, inferiorly by teres major, and laterally by the long head of triceps brachii. From this posterior perspective, the vein tracks deep to the deltoid and adjacent to the infraspinatus and teres minor on the dorsal surface of the scapula, with the acromion and proximal humerus providing bony orientation. Small venules converge along its path and communicate with paired arterial companions in the same corridor. Clear topography. That relationship to the triangular space matters in the operating room and in trauma. Posterior shoulder approaches, including exposure of the quadrangular and triangular spaces, can encounter this vessel during dissection around the lateral scapular border, and uncontrolled bleeding is a predictable nuisance if the circumflex scapular vein is avulsed while mobilizing teres major or the long head of triceps. Its communications between the subscapular system and dorsal scapular territory also make it a practical teaching example of scapular anastomoses and collateral pathways when the axillary artery or proximal subclavian system is compromised. Use it in gross anatomy lab manuals when teaching the posterior shoulder, in surgical anatomy references covering axillary and scapular spaces, or in radiology and vascular modules that correlate surface landmarks with the subscapular vessels.
